E-paper

(1) A variety of coated and uncoated paper specialized for printing by computer printers. (2) (DigitalPaper) The file format generated by the Common Ground document exchange software. The term implies that the computer file can be used to regenerate the style and format of the original paper form. (3) An input technology from Anoto AB, Lund, Sweden (www.anoto.com) that turns a paper form into a wireless transmission system. It uses regular paper imprinted with a dot grid that is almost invisible. The dot grid is coded so that when traced with an Anotoenabled pen, the pen senses the unique dot pattern on this „digital paper“ that is associated with a particular application. The pen transmits either <acronym title="American Standard Code for Information Interchange">ASCII</acronym> text or the actual written images to a receiving device. The pen discharges regular ink so you can see what you mark or write. (4) A future e-book technology that uses ultra thin pages, each of which serves as a screen that can be instantly updated. Also known as „e-paper.“ A paper-like material developed at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (www.parc.com) that can change its display properties when a voltage is applied. It is made of a thin sheet of gyricon plastic, invented by Xerox, that contains millions of charged beads with black and white hemispheres. When the paper is fed through an „Electronic Paper printer,“ a voltage pattern is applied, and the beads either show their black or white side. The Electronic Paper can be fed through the printer about a thousand times.
